2018/28/10 – By mediating conflicts and combining their assets in the Horn of Africa, Saudi Arabia and the UAE are slowly cementing an arc of political influence across the region.
In September 16, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki signed a peace agreement in Jeddah. This move, initiated by Ahmed’s election and supported by intense UAE and U.S. back-channel diplomacy over the past few months, is putting an end to a decade of war and tension between their two countries. The next day, Saudi Arabia also hosted the first face-to-face talks between Eritrea and Djibouti after more than a decade of border disputes, following a peace agreement the two countries had signed on September 6. Saudi mediation was warmly welcomed by Djiboutian President Ismail Omar Guelleh, who declared in an interview with Asharq Al-Awsat that Saudi Arabia’s role was key to normalizing Djibouti’s relations with Eritrea. 2018/23/11 – Mohammed bin Mahmoud Al-Ali, Saudi ambassador to Tunisia, met here today with Pakistani ambassador to Tunisia Mohammed Hassan.
During the meeting, they reviewed bilateral relations between the two countries and discussed issues of common interest.
2018/07/21 – On June 29, a suicide attack shook the headquarters of the Sahel’s five-nation anti-terror force, failing to inflict major damage but exposing the fragility of the much-trumpeted scheme.
Countries in the G5 Sahel — Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania, Niger — joined with France, the big international backer of the force, in vowing not to surrender to fear.
