Estonia / Mali: Foreign, defense ministers emphasize need to stabilize Sahel region

13/06/2020 – Minister of Foreign Affairs Urmas Reinsalu (Isamaa) and Minister of Defense Jüri Luik (Isamaa) on Friday attended a high-level meeting of the Coalition for the Sahel, where they expressed support for the coalition and emphasized the need to stabilize the Sahel region.

The agenda for Friday’s meeting, which was also attended by foreign and defense ministers from France, the U.K-, the U.S. and the G5 Sahel states⁠ — Mauritania, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger and Chad⁠ — as well as other parties and representatives operating in the Sahel region, included military operations in the Sahel region, providing security support to the G5 Sahel countries and engaging the international community, according to a Ministry of Foreign Affairs press release.

German parliament extends army’s Africa missions #Niger #Mali

2019/05/09 – The German Bundestag, or lower house of parliament, voted overwhelmingly to extend three army missions in Africa for another year on Thursday. The army, known as the Bundeswehr, is currently engaged in one UN and one EU mission in Mali and another EU mission in Somalia. 2018/04/10 – Le général suédois Dennis Gyllensporre a succédé mardi à Bamako au Belge Jean-Paul Deconinck comme commandant de la force – militaire – de la Mission multidimensionnelle intégrée des Nations Unies pour la stabilisation au Mali (Minusma), la quatrième plus importante force de maintien de la paix onusienne dans le monde.

The Sahel: A Hopeless Corner of the World? #Mali

On 9 May 2018, the Estonian parliament (Riigikogu) approved sending an armoured infantry platoon to Mali. The Scouts Battalion troops deployed in Africa will participate in the French military anti-insurgent Operation Barkhane for a year. This decision must, above all, be viewed in the light of bilateral military cooperation between Estonia and France, which began with our participation in the European Union Military Training Mission in the Central African Republic in 2015. France was grateful to the countries that took part in this mission, because this allowed it to move some of its troops into Operation Sangaris that was taking place in the CAR at the same time.
