2018/08/05 – Canada will deploy up to 20 civilian police officers to support both the United Nations peacekeeping mission and the European Union training mission in Mali.
The contribution is in addition to the 250 aircrew and soldiers already assigned to the mission’s military helicopter detachment. 2018/07/21 – British helicopters have deployed to Mali in support of a French counter-terrorism operation amid warnings of being dragged into ‘open-ended’ conflict.
Three RAF Chinook helicopters supported by 90 military personnel have been sent to north-west Africa to assist French forces in their fight against Islamist insurgents.
The British helicopters, from RAF Odiham in Hampshire, will provide logistical and troop movement support. However, experts fear the deployment could mark the start of an open-ended commitment to a new military campaign.

2018/07/19 – British helicopters have arrived in West Africa as the UK’s support to a key French counter-terrorism operation in Mali reaches its next phase.

2018/06/24 Selling the public on the Mali mission will get underway pretty soon. The African mission is the Liberal government’s high-profile initiative to show Canada supports the United Nations. The government is concentrating on generating as much positive publicity as it can for Canada’s contribution, which also coincides with a Liberal election promise to do with the UN. 2018/06/15 – The first troops from a 100-member U.K. contingent to be deployed alongside French counter-terrorism forces in west Africa have arrived in the region, the French military said Thursday.
“The first troops from the British Chinook deployment, which will comprise three heavy transport helicopters and will be deployed in Gao [northern Mali] have arrived,” armed forces spokesman Colonel Patrik Steiger said. The Trudeau government is keeping the door open to sending more helicopters to Mali to ensure the Canadian Forces can provide round-the-clock medical evacuations in what is expected to be a harsh operating environment.
