2018/04/10 – The security situation is evolving rapidly in West Africa and the Sahel—and worsening in places. The region has already featured quite prominently in the news in the first quarter of 2018. There has been another mass abduction of girls by the Islamist group, Boko Haram, in Nigeria, then an attack in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso’s capital, against the army’s headquarters and the French embassy. 2018/02/21 – The State Department added the Burkinabe jihadist group Ansaroul Islam, which is tied to al Qaeda’s network in Mali, to the US government’s list of specially designated global terrorist organizations today. State noted that Ansaroul Islam has “launched numerous attacks in northern Burkina Faso near the border with Mali.” While State’s announcement did not mention it, Ansaroul Islam is closely associated with al Qaeda’s network in Mali. 2018/01/25 – The U.S. military is reviewing images posted on social media purportedly showing dead American soldiers from the Oct. 4 ambush in Niger.
One author and researcher posted on Twitter that a video broadcast by an affiliate of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) lasted more than 10 minutes and included scenes of a wounded soldier and the bodies of the three other U.S. soldiers killed in the ambush. 11/01/18 – Mali’s army is to deploy patrols in an operation to fight jihadists in the country’s restive centre, according to documents and sources consulted by AFP, as the government expresses concern over extreme instability in the area.
