30/06/2020 – Nouakchott abritera, mardi 30 juin, la conférence des Chefs d’Etat et de Gouvernement du G5-Sahel et de la France, sous la coprésidence de Son Excellence le Président de la République, Monsieur Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, président en exercice du G5 Sahel et du Président français Son Excellence Monsieur Emmanuel Macron, en présence de leurs Excellences les présidents tchadien Idriss Déby Itno, nigérien Issoufou Mahamadou, malien Ibrahim Boubacar Keita et burkinabé Roch Marc Christian Kaboré, et aux côtés du chef du gouvernement espagnol Pedro Sanchez, du président de la Commission de l’Union Africaine Moussa Faki Mahamat et de la secrétaire générale de l’Organisation internationale de la francophonie, Louise Mushikiwabo. Algeria Flexes Military Muscles With Base on Moroccan Border

Egypt is prepared to go to war in Libya

28/06/2020 – After a fourteen-month campaign on Tripoli, forces loyal to the Libyan National Army are in retreat. To those who support the UN-recognized government in Tripoli, this should serve as great news. Since 2012, a power vacuum has consumed Libya following the fall of longtime Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi.
Both sides of the civil war view themselves as the true leaders of Libya. The Government of National Accord is the product of a 2015 UN-brokered agreement, known as the Libyan Political Agreement. This agreement was deemed unacceptable by neighboring Egypt, which originates from their political history with those who make up the GNA.

Morocco consul leaves Algeria over ‘enemy country’ remark

13/06/2020 – A spokesman for the Algerian presidency, Mohand Oussaid Belaid, announced yesterday that the Moroccan consul who described Algeria as an “enemy country” has left the country at Algiers’ request.

13/’6/2020 – Moroccan and Malian institutions should boost their cooperation and seize the numerous partnership opportunities, said newly-elected President of the National Assembly of Mali, Moussa Timbine.

Czech Army takes charge of EU training mission in Mali

13/06/2020 – The Czech Army took charge of the EU training mission in Mali on Friday. It marks the first time that the Czech military has headed such a foreign mission. Over 700 soldiers from European countries are currently training Mali’s army to fight Islamist militias.

Among them are 120 soldiers Czech stationed in Mali under the command of Brigadier General František Ridzák, who now heads the entire EU mission in the West African country, previously led by a Portuguese officer. The Council of the European Union has extended the duration of the training mission until 2024.

Estonia / Mali: Foreign, defense ministers emphasize need to stabilize Sahel region

13/06/2020 – Minister of Foreign Affairs Urmas Reinsalu (Isamaa) and Minister of Defense Jüri Luik (Isamaa) on Friday attended a high-level meeting of the Coalition for the Sahel, where they expressed support for the coalition and emphasized the need to stabilize the Sahel region.

The agenda for Friday’s meeting, which was also attended by foreign and defense ministers from France, the U.K-, the U.S. and the G5 Sahel states⁠ — Mauritania, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger and Chad⁠ — as well as other parties and representatives operating in the Sahel region, included military operations in the Sahel region, providing security support to the G5 Sahel countries and engaging the international community, according to a Ministry of Foreign Affairs press release.
