Qatar’s Defense Minister says discussions in Libya centered on unity, political solution

21/08/2020 – The Qatari Defense Minister Khaled Al Attiyah said the tripartite meetings (Libya, Qatar and Turkey) in Tripoli tackled discussions on unity of Libya and political solutions to its crisis, saying Doha believes political solutions are the only way out of the conflict, according to statements he made to Al Jazeera Wednesday.

The Qatari Defense Minister said instability in Libya impacted all neighboring countries as well as the rest of the region.

Al Attiyah and Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar visited Tripoli last Monday and discussed with the Head of the Presidential Council Fayez Al-Sarraj as well as other officials military and security cooperation among other issues, including Sirte and Jufra.

Meanwhile, Turkish newspaper Yeni Safak said Ankara and Doha were trying to support the establishment of a professional Libyan army under the command of the Government of National Accord, saying the meetings in Tripoli last Monday went into details of this step.

It said Turkey will be training elements from GNA forces in Turkish military facilities, adding that right now, there are 192 military cadets being trained in Turkey.
