Morocco, Libya discuss security situation in Libya

2019/19/02 – Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Nasser Bourita and Libya’s Interior Minister Fathi Bashagha discussed Monday in Rabat security situation in Libya.Bashagha said at a joint press conference following talks with Bourita that the meeting focused on security issues and ways to achieve stability and avoid political and military chaos in Libya, as well as means to fight organized crimes, terrorism and illegal immigration.

The Libyan minister said Morocco has always stood on the side of Libyans in a neutral manner, adding that Libyan Political Agreement, which was signed in the Moroccan city of Skhirat, remains the « ideal framework » to achieve national reconciliation.

For his part, Bourita reaffirmed Morocco’s support to the efforts aimed at restoring stability in Libya, stressing the Skhirat agreement is « the only framework that has been agreed upon by Libyans to manage the transitional period on the institutional, political and security levels. »

The Moroccan minister also highlighted the importance of the security approach to solving the Libyan crisis, adding that Libya needs stability and strong security institutions to address the spread of armed and terrorist groups in some parts of the country, he added.
